The function of the Lakeway Floodplain Administrator is to insure that the City minimizes the threat of flood to life and property. To meet these objectives, the City has a comprehensive floodplain ordinance that addresses such issues as watersheds, development, waterways and that it meets, or exceeds, the federal and state regulatory agency standards.

Any development that impacts our water flow or drainage in Lakeway can influence the flow of water into the Colorado River. This in turn can directly impact our neighbors down stream.

The Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) recognizing the mutual benefits of all communities working cooperatively to reduce or eliminate activities that could aggravate flood conditions invited along the Colorado. Lakeway is a charter member of an organization named the Texas Colorado River Floodplain Coalition (TCRFC). It is made up of fifty plus communities along the Colorado from above Lake Buchanan to the Matagorda Bay. The goal is for all of the member counties, municipalities and villages to establish building and development practices that will result in "no rise" in the base flood elevation (BFE). The BFE is the line drawn on the floodplain maps to represent the 100-year floodplain.

The TCRFC membership has adopted a set of measurements to assign an effectiveness rating to the floodplain ordinances and regulations of each member community. With pride we can state that Lakeway has an outstanding rating, the highest rating available.
